As humans we are naturally drawn to pattern, repetition and rhythm. They occur in nature and in man made environments. They occur in art, music and dance. They move us, they point us to movement, they capture our imagination. Pattern, repetition and rhythm draw us in to their world and hold our attention.

In this two day workshop we will explore this dynamic aspect to design and composition. The instructor will be teaching in oils, but acrylic, pastel and watercolor may be used.

Workshop begins with a fascinating slide show of examples and discussion of the theory of pattern, repetition and rhythm. Brief overview of color theory and texture.

We will work with high contrast, black and white sketches, which we will develop into a large color canvas.

Class is taught by nationally recognized, award-winning plein air and studio oil painter Debra Howard. Debra is known for her unusual color palette and incorporation of patterns and rhythms in her work. Her introduction to the Eastern Shore came by way of Tangier Island. A tiny, remote island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. She lived there for 3 years, as the artist-in-residence and then as the Executive Director for the Tangier History Museum. She accomplished the task of painting a painting a day to document the seasons and changes on this disappearing island. Her work was featured in The American Scholar Magazine. The experience changed her; “I paint now with more energy, passion and immediacy,” Howard says, “which coincidentally reflect the very nature of the island. The island is raw.”

Ages: 16+

Level: Beginner to Advanced (Not for those who have never painted before, but this is a great class for beginners who have painted before as well as experienced painters who want to shake up their painting process!)
