In the tradition of fine printmaking, here is a way to utilize your drawing skills.  Use an image you are proud of and create multiple original hand pulled prints.

Transform your favorite drawing into a fine art limited edition lithograph in this six-week class taught by Gunston art teacher and printmaker Ben Dize.  The RiverArts Education Center houses a printing press and the increasingly rare lithography stones required for this fascinating medium.    Artists such as Whistler, Degas, Daumier and Matisse explored the rich, velvety blacks and subtle grays they could achieve drawing on the stone surface with a specialized grease pencil.

This class is designed for those with no lithography experience as well as those who wish to perfect their techniques.

Under Dize’s guidance, students will transfer their image to the stone and learn the process to etch the surface and print a small edition.  The resulting lithograph is an original work of art in the same category of fine art prints such as etchings and woodcuts.  All artists are welcome, with or without previous lithography experience.

Students should come to class with a drawing that they wish to print- approximately 8”x 10”. The artist’s drawing can then be transferred to the stone. Once transferred, the drawing is filled in with line and tone.  The etch is carefully matched to the individual stone and drawing. Once etched, the stone is ready to print.

There is a $20 per student material fee payable to the instructor.

The instructor will schedule the final (sixth)  class with individual students.
