This is a fast-paced, hands-on workshop designed to introduce students to the wide variety of pencil brands and types and the many types of working surfaces available to the colored pencil artist, along with invaluable colored pencil techniques, tips, and tools.

It is perfect forĀ artists wanting to learn to use colored pencils in their own work; as well as colored pencil enthusiasts looking to graduate from adult coloring books and create their own colored pencil art.

All supplies provided by instructor: a bag containing about 20 different types and brands of colored pencils and an envelope with 9 or 10 different papers. (Instructor will collect pencils end of workshop.)

Recommended that studentsĀ  bring a notebook and pen/pencil for taking notes.

Students will learn about colored pencil as a fine art medium with respect to:

  • Materials
    • Types of pencils available and their properties
    • Types of surfaces available and their properties
    • Other tools needed for success
  • Applications and Techniques
    • Layering and glazing for best effects
    • Achieving a full range of values
    • Mark-making, textures, burnishing, blending, erasing and incising

Students will explore and experiment hands-on with a variety of techniques using 16 different brands of pencils on nine types of surfaces, including:

  • Layering colored pencils on white, mid-value, and dark papers
  • Layering colored pencils over watercolor washes on sanded (pastel) paper
  • Layering colored pencils on suede mat board
  • Layering & dissolving colored pencils on drafting film
  • Using water-soluble colored pencils on watercolor paper
