dir. Ryan Coogler, 2013

Fruitvale Station follows the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008. Dedicated to making something of himself, Oscar starts out well, but soon realizes that change is more difficult than he anticipated. His resolve takes a tragic turn, however, when he encounters police officers on New Year’s Eve. Ryan Coogler deftly directs a film that screams true civil rights for people of color in the United States, leveraging a naturalistic style and poetic pace to narrate the tragic death would shake California – and the entire nation – to its very core. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer, and Melanie Diaz

Winner, Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Feature, Sundance Film Festival

Winner, Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic Film, Sundance Film Festival

Fruitvale Station is a gut punch of a movie. By standing in solidarity with Oscar, it becomes an unstoppable cinematic force.” Rolling Stone

“In naturalistic and unforced strokes, he allows Grant to exist as a complex, even contradictory human, inviting the audience simply to sit with his life, his loss and what they both meant.” The Washington Post

“Fruitvale Station’s wrenching power lies in the specificity of its storytelling and the ordinary human warmth of the world it conjures.” Slate
