At Work

RiverArt’s May exhibition “At Work” celebrates the work we do and have done in this community through art and stories.  “At Work” is a companion exhibit to the traveling Smithsonian exhibit, “The Way We Worked,” on display at Sumner Hall from March 31 through May 19.   On display at RiverArts will be stories from workers at Vita Foods in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s along with photos from an album belonging to Robert Moore of employees in the 60’s.  Vita Foods, a pickling plant where many African Americans worked in the 1940’s through 1973, was later replaced with Dixon Valve.  Stories and photographs from employees of Dixon Valve will also be included in the exhibition.  Paintings, photographs and other work of art depicting workers on farms, on the water, in businesses, in the arts and in the service industry will also be on display to celebrate the importance of work in this community.

At Work is curated by Lani Seikaly, longstanding RiverArts curator and Leslie Raimond, director of the Kent County Arts Council, both of whom have been active oral historians of Kent County residents.   Major contributors to the exhibit include photographers Bob Miller and Ken Young, interviewers Jonathan Chace and Jan Elvin and exhibition display experts, Ronn Akins and Jim North.
