RiverArts Elects New Directors to Board

On Thursday, June 18, the Chestertown RiverArts membership gathered for the annual meeting to review highlights from the last year and to elect new directors to the board. President-Elect Mary Jo McCulloch announced the slate of new directors. This year’s new board members bring a wide variety of experience and insight to the board. The new board members include J.R. Alfee, Raven Bishop, Barbara Fancher, Mary M. Sjoquist, and Greg Waddell.

JR Alfee was born and raised in Galena, Md. He worked in a variety of local restaurants while growing up, including operating a luncheonette in the Rudnick’s barn on Saturdays. He even had his own catering business in the early ’80s. He then left the food industry —and Maryland— proceeding to work with various Fortune 500 companies for close to fifteen years, predominantly in human resources.

Alfee returned to the Eastern Shore in 2008 and opened the Lemon Leaf in its first location, on the corner of Cross and Cannon. He then moved Lemon Leaf to High Street and opened JR’s next door. JR has become a well-known and admired businessman and a great friend to Chestertown and its citizens.

Raven Bishop is an award winning National Board Certified Visual Arts educator, artist, community art consultant, and mentor artist.
She is the Artistic Director for Creating Communities’ Arts Mentorship Academy, an organization that provides exemplary arts programming for at-risk and at-need youth in the Annapolis area. She also is the Middle Level Division Director and Vice President of Professional Development for the Maryland Art Education Association and will soon be coordinating and curating their social media initiatives.

A voracious advocate for Art Education, Raven is a frequent presenter at conferences and professional development workshops as well as a frequent contributor to the MAEA Gazette. An artist in her own right, Raven works as a freelance graphic designer/marketing consultant for small businesses. She has exhibited her paintings throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania and in the past three years has begun exploring the intersection large-scale installation and experiential art works as a means of personal and community healing.

Barbara Fancher received her Bachelor of Science degree from George Washington University and an Organization Development Certificate also from Georgetown. For most of her career, she worked in the medical profession in Medical Imaging departments. Her latest position was at Chester River Hospital from 2003 to 2010.

Barbara has been an extraordinary member of the community. Her volunteer work has included the Mainstay Board of Directors where she served as Vice President and most recently as President in 2011-2012. She is also an active member of Chestertown RiverArts, Rock Hall Garden Club, Women’s League of Washington College, League of Women Voters, Corsica Ladies investment Club, Blue Stocking Literary Society Book Club, Greater Rock Hall Literary Society and Book Club.

Mary M. Sjoquist is currently Special Counsel to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (“PCAOB”). In this capacity, Ms. Sjoquist works directly with Board Members and senior staff of the PCAOB in formulating the rules required by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, new and revised auditing standards and other policies affecting registered public accounting firms. Prior to joining the PCAOB, Ms. Sjoquist was a partner at Patton Boggs LLP, a large national law firm, where she chaired the firm’s Business Practice group.

Ms. Sjoquist a JD degree from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law and a BA degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada. She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association and is active in the American Bar Association’s Federal Regulation of Securities Committee and the Securities Subcommittee of the Small Business Committee.  She is married to Charles Sjoquist and resides in Grasonville.

Greg Waddell is the Owner and Principal of Waddell Creative, LLC. He has more than 15 years of marketing and visual design experience, and brings with him a wealth of lifestyle brand experience that straddles strategy and implementation. With years of delivering successful projects to top tier Fortune 500 companies as well as smaller, more nimble brands, excellence is the sandbox I like to play in. Today, he primarily works with small brands that have no marketing department or a very small one. The one thing they all have in common is passion for their business and an undeniable drive to succeed.

Greg’s life has been entrenched with art, design and travel. After earning a bachelor’s degree in art history from Emory University, and doing masters level work in architecture at Tulane University, he traveled the world for work and for leisure. To Waddell Creative, he brings a unique, seasoned perspective and an open-minded, creative outlook.

In addition to the election of new board members, exiting board members were recognized. Gerry Edwards, Jack Fancher, Shelley Minch, Cindy Stafford and Joan Strand were recognized for their contributions to RiverArts. Each of them were members of the board since Chestertown Arts League and Arworks merged in 2012 to create RiverArts. Their collective guidance helped to create the thriving and robust organization that RiverArts is.

McCulloch also recognized Lani Seikaly, current RiverArts president, who will be stepping down as of July 1. In appreciation of all she has done for RiverArts and for Chestertown, the RiverArts board will be planting a tree as part of the new riverfront walkway.

We are a dynamic group of artists, art lovers, and folks who believe the arts enrich us all, both as individuals and as a community. Through programming for children and adults, exhibitions, classes, and more, we strive to excite the creative spark in everyone.
