Gift Shop Artists -August & September

Marlayn King and Joy Berghaus are Gift Shop Artists of the Month

Marlayn King

Marlayn King graduated from Syracuse University in 1985, with a Bachelors of Fine Arts. Her studies there included graphic design and visual communications. Presently, Marlayn is a principle at Mullin/Ashley Associates in Chestertown, MD where she has worked as the creative director since 1990. Mullin/Ashley is a marketing communications firm with national and international clients. Prior to her employment in Chestertown, she lived and worked in upstate New York and New York City. Her career has included working for an interior design firm, publishing company and graphics arts studio.

In 2008 Marlayn began taking ceramics classes at River Arts Clay Studio under the instruction of Marilee Schumann. Marlayn feels she has greatly benefited from the support and friendship of all the great potters at RiverArts Clay Studio at Still Pond Station. They have all taught and influenced her in some way. Marlayn set-up a pottery studio at home in 2012, which has allowed her to spend more time on ceramics. She hopes to continue to develop her skills as a ceramic artist while creating pleasing functional pottery that other can enjoy.

Joy Berghaus

Joy Berghaus was born in Boston, lived in New England and Virginia, and now lives in Galena, on the Eastern shore of Maryland.  She majored in art at the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1964,  has taken many classes and dabbled in many forms of arts and crafts, including watercolor, pottery, weaving, macramé, knitting, fabric art and jewelry making. She always loved enhancing our own store jewelry. Soon she realized that making jewelry might take her to a new “happy place,” and it was not long before it became her serious passion. A few beads turned into 40+ boxes of beads.  Never can have enough beads!

Colors, textures and combinations of available beads of glass, crystal, porcelain, shell, semi-precious stone, pearl, silver-plated metal tube beads and charms inspire Joy.  Each piece of her wearable art is an original. No two are exactly alike.

Joy’s wearable art pieces are worn in Japan, Taiwan, China, Iceland, Spain and Germany. Her work has been displayed at the Handworks Gallery and shown at the Eugene Smith Gallery in Winchester, Virginia,  the Tracey Roberts Salon in Middletown, Delaware, and in other craft shows. The little maids in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival wore her children’s bracelets.  She has exhibited in RiverArts shows including the Studio Tour.  Her wearable art is sold at the RiverArts Gift Shop and at their annual Holiday Show.
